Poa pratensis

Poa pratensis is a perennial turfgrass species capable of forming a dense sward through vigorous rhizome development. Its short stature and fine leaves are its distinctive physical traits. It germinates in 12–21 days and establishes slowly. For this reason, Poa pratensis is usually combined with faster-establishing species such as Lolium perenne. Poa pratensis tolerates frequent mowing and intensive use, which is why it is widely used on sports fields and in parks and gardens. Although the traditional types were not tolerant of heat, close mowing or disease, breeding programmes have developed varieties that resist disease, heat and close mowing in a range of colours and densities.
